Mother feeding babies.

The pictures above were taken on the 31st. Earlier today, April 1st, I went to check on my chickens and of course, the nest of wrens, and there was all kinds of chirping going on from the wren family. It seems our neighbor’s cat was spying on the babies as they were leaving the nest. Even the squirrels were screeching at them!

I ran the cat off but had to keep a close eye on it because it kept coming back over in our yard.

Anyway, the babies launched on April Fool’s Day! There will be no more baby wren pictures unless I find another nest. Next will be the baby chicks when they hatch, which is not far off.

This little bird is enthralled with my husbands truck mirrors. They are large and seem to attract them no matter where it is sitting.

These little birds are so much fun to watch. I don’t know what attracts them to the mirrors, but it makes no difference if it parked in the front or back yard, they find his truck.

Here is a couple of more pictures from some of my visitors outside my office window. There are actually two doves and they hang out in the bushes but do wander out occasionally. The size of them tells me they are young. Very cute!

These are pictures of only one of the doves. I will work at catching them both together in one shot.

Today it is kind of dreary outside but I will keep a close watch to see if I can find some of my other feathered friends doing some of their bird antics.

It seems my rooster and chickens have a different opinion of the vine. Normally at this time of the year the bees are all over it. Since the chickens are penned up, they have managed to keep the bees away and enjoy the plant. Some of the plants are low hanging and the chickens and rooster jump up to pull some of the blooms off the vine.

It won’t be long now before the baby chicks are hatched. I love watching how they grow overnight and change before my eyes. I will be sure to keep you updated when the event happens.

As you can see by the picture, the nest is in a hanging plant. Wrens seem to make their nest in just about any little nook or cranny. I am watching them daily and this afternoon while snapping additional photos of the babies, the mother flew up and fed them. I didn’t have my good camera but I still took a couple of shots in hopes that I could doctor them up in photoshop. If so, I will share tomorrow.

I haven’t shared any pictures of my rooster and hens lately so here are some of my flock.
Pictured are from lower to upper: Ugly, an Aracauna hen; Rooster, a cross-breed between a Light Brahma rooster and a black Sexlink hen; and Henny Penny, a cross-breed the same mix as Rooster. Where the colors came from in the rooster I do not know because the father was white with a tail the same color as his. The mother was solid black.

In the background is a Silver-laced Wyandotte hen called Lacy that you can just barely see around the rooster. I also have a Barred-rock hen called Pepper.
This rooster has the best disposition. So did his father. I have heard tales of some mean roosters and am sure as I grow my flock I will run across some. I am not looking forward to the day because I have heard they can be vicious.

Unfortunately for my backyard chickens, they are having to stay in a pen the majority of the time. Our house is up for sale and some people just do not like my animals. Occasionally I let them out if I know for sure someone is not looking at the house. The last time I did though the chickens got in my flower bed and scratched up all the new plants I had just planted the day before.

My friend is currently building her a hen house and I am anxious to see the progress. I will definitely share when I go to visit her with camera in hand. She does a good job in building stuff so I am sure it will be great.

Female and male eastern bluebirds in the morning hours.

This is the view from my office window. I love watching the birds in the morning. They seem to be very active in the early morning and then slow down about 11am. Maybe it is nesting time. I don’t know but it suddenly gets quiet.

The bluebird box in the picture is probably about 7 years old and has raised several families. I have never witnessed the launch of the babies (mainly because I am too impatient) but after the launch I know they are gone because they sit close by in the trees for a few days.

Our house is up for sale now and this bluebird box will go with us when we move. It’s not that I couldn’t get another but I just enjoy knowing that this box has been at two homes with us and will go to the next and continue raising more families.

Here’s a another photo I took later in the afternoon of the male. He is sooooo beautiful!

This is actually a half-way decent picture. This is not normal for me!

The mother made the nest in a hanging plant outside my husband’s shop. I frequent and watch but try not to disturb.

Here’s another and in this one there is definitely one looking at the camera. I had to shake the nest a little to get them to respond .

It is amazing what you will find in your backyard if you go out and visit.

I am getting frequent visit of finches now. In a post from yesterday, you might have noticed a blurry finch in a picture. At this time of year, the males are in the molting stage and are just starting to show their bright yellow colors. Occasionally I will see one that is fully molted (I hope I am saying that correctly. If not, please forgive as I am a newbie or a wannabe birder).

Later today I will post a couple of pictures of my nesting hen. I have them taken but it is very early morning here so I am in need of some shut-eye.

What the heck, it’s only a couple of pictures. Here they are–Rhoda sitting on her nest. She doesn’t look like she is in a good mood, does she?

With this being early spring in Florida, the weather is awesome and the colors outside are gorgeous. I have not taken any photos of late of the birds that are visiting but we have a large variety, as I suspect many do. One thing I did notice was the hummingbirds were later this year than last. It could be this cooler than normal weather.

I now have my feeder back on my window so when I am online I can watch the hummers feed. I also have a view of a bluebird box outside of my office window. The bluebirds are back and are nesting soon to be raising another family. Last year they raised two families out of the box.

Anyway, for now I am back and will share a few photos I have from my current flock of chickens and also backyard visitors.

I promise I will try to get a better camera and work on my photography skills. Thank you stopping in and checking out my blog. Leave a comment with a link to your blog as I enjoy reading other blogs that have some of the same interests as me.

Here’s my last picture for today. If you have read any of the entries from this blog you will know I really enjoy my backyard chickens. My Rhode Island Red, Rhoda, is nesting at this time so about April 10th I will have some new little chicks to keep me entertained. I will keep you updated as to the progress.

When I had little chicks running around in the backyard the hawks frequently spied and waited to pounce upon them.  The chickens make a strange noise warning each other when a hawk is in the area.  Even the young chicks make this noise and run to the bushes. 

I have other pics of things in my backyard, besides birds, and I will share in a later post.  Enjoy your Labor Day weekend!
